"THE NOT SO LONELY SHEPHERD"

Medium: Oil Size: 16x20 inches

The inspiration for this painting was memories of my bachelor uncle, Sam Reed. He worked his entire lifetime in the outdoors. He was either manning fire lookout stations or camping in the fields with sheep. Both occupations demanded a watchful eye and solitude. I remember his seasonal visits to our house during his “down time.” Pulling up in his old truck with a pile of dirty laundry, a couple of dogs would leap over the tailgate. He would head to the house with a ravenous appetite and an overdue need for a bath. He had a way of mumbling to himself and answering his own questions. A sense of kindness and peacefulness radiated from him; and he was comfortable being “alone” with the animals. I tried to paint what I imagined his camp would have looked like in the 1950’s-1970’sC
