"GIRL WITH THE PEARL EARRING"

Original oil, 16 x 20, not for sale

The famous painting was by Dutch artist, Johannes Vermeer of the 17th century; and I copied it to learn the drawing/glazing techniques. My instructor, Frank Covino, believed that painting should be approached like learning to play the piano. One must learn (and duplicate) from the masters. So our class chose paintings from the Renaissance era and painstakingly sketched, blocked in with charcoal, and used a limited color palette of green-grey tones, a palette from the masters. Unfortunately, I did not advance to the color stage. Frank Covino passed away in 2016, and I am on my own to complete the final stages. Here, I offer it in its monochromatic rendition.
